Tipping Etiquette
EVERYONE needs to read this. It's great. Written by a bartender. I don't even wait tables anymore, but I still try to encourage good tipping.
6 friends and I went to IHOP on Free Pancake Day this year. A couple of us ordered juice/coffee, maybe a side, but at least 2 people just got the free pancakes and water. That's cool; that didn't bother me. What did bother me is that they assumed they didn't have to tip. "It's free," they said. "We're poor college students, anyway," they said. Oh, yes, and I'm a wealthy... not-college-student? Right. If you can't afford to tip, don't go out to eat/drink. Good lord. You think they're getting paid well to bring you your water and short stack? About $2.13 an hour. Can YOU make a living on $2.13 an hour? I didn't think so.
I'm tempted to tag the guilty parties names in this, but I won't. I will tag the college though, because, unfortunately, it's not just college students who tip poorly. Quite often, church groups tip so miserably. Just because you're cool with God doesn't mean you can get away with not tipping. I really don't care how much money you gave to your church last week.
I just can't go out to eat with these people. I really can't condone what they do. Plus, I get really ticked off. They're poor tippers. You think just because you're kind and gracious to the server that she doesn't care that you're cheap??? I haaaate that. A compliment is not the same as a tip. An unfortunate amount of people think that. "You did such a good job! Here's a crappy 10%."
I get kinda up in arms about this. When people say stuff like "$3 tip is good on $20, right?" NO. Geez.
